This thesis is based upon the study of 160 000 animal bones issued from 23 late iron-age sites excavated in the Auvergne region of central France. The assemblages represent different types of archaeological contexts (farms, aristocratic settlements, agglomerations, oppida, religious/ritual zones and funeral areas) which enable us to study their role in the domestic, craft and sacrificial spheres. The aim of this thesis is to show the implications of animal use within the Gallic society.This thorough study also replaces the data into the chronological context of Gaul between the LaTèneien and Augustian periods, and the geographical territory of the Clermont-Ferrand Basin in the Limagne plain…

The sector of the Saint-Étienne necropolis (Beaune), reveals the existence of two clearly separated zones which are characterized by different funeral and cultural practices: tomb architecture, archaeological material and artificially deformed crania. This seems to provide evidence of two distinct groups. A preliminary morpho-metrical study of four skulls and the examination of several CT scans of three of them, allow us to confirm the presence of artificial antero-posterior cranial deformations.

De réelles mutations, qui renvoient à celles que connait la société française au cours des années 60 et 70, modifient la vie culturelle des Français. Le rôle des pouvoirs publics, sans être négligeable, pèse somme toute assez peu face aux tendances socio-économiques et technologiques. Georges Pompidou a-t-il perçu, sinon compris, les nouvelles modalités de la vie culturelle du pays ? La modernité qu'il revendique — notamment dans le domaine des arts plastiques — est-elle en phase avec les pratiques culturelles des Français ?
